What are the known NHTSA recalls for a 2016 Ford Explorer?
The NHTSA lists 56 recall entries affecting the 2016 Ford Explorer across components like axle shafts, rear suspension, parking brake, fuel system, seats, and structure. These recalls include risks such as loss of park or motive power (axle shaft), fractured rear toe links and wheel hubs (rear suspension), parking brake failure, fuel leaks that could increase fire risk, and seat or seat-belt issues that affect occupant restraint. Bill Estes Ford Brownsburg tracks NHTSA notices and will confirm whether your VIN is affected and complete any required OEM repairs free of charge.
How do I check if my 2016 Ford Explorer has an open recall?
You can check your VIN on NHTSA.gov or bring your vehicle to Bill Estes Ford Brownsburg and we will verify recalls at no charge. Call Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332 or use our online resource and then schedule service if any repairs are needed. We also offer service financing so you can get immediate help if other non-recall repairs are identified while your recall work is completed.
How much does a 2016 Ford Explorer recall repair cost?

If additional non-recall work is recommended, our team will explain costs and offer payment options including service financing and any current service specials. Can I get my 2016 Ford Explorer recall fixed at an independent shop or do I need a dealer?
Manufacturer recall repairs must be completed according to the recall remedy, and a certified franchise dealer like Bill Estes Ford Brownsburg is the safe, recommended choice. Franchise dealers have OEM parts, factory diagnostic tools, and direct access to Ford technical service bulletins and warranty support; this ensures the repair is correct and documented with the manufacturer. If you prefer an independent shop, confirm they use OEM parts and follow Ford repair procedures; however, for many recalls the manufacturer directs owners to dealers for the official remedy.
How long does a 2016 Ford Explorer recall repair take?
Most recall repairs range from a quick inspection to a few hours, but some remedies require parts that may be delayed; timing varies by recall campaign and parts availability. For example, axle shaft bracket replacements (NHTSA recall 20S63) have required interim notices when parts are not immediately available; we will notify you of expected wait times when you schedule service. Bill Estes Ford Brownsburg will provide an estimated turnaround when you arrive and can often complete other recommended inspections while your vehicle is in for recall work.
Does an open recall affect my 2016 Ford Explorer's trade-in or resale value?
Yes — unresolved recalls can reduce buyer confidence and affect trade-in or resale value for a 2016 Ford Explorer. Many dealers and private buyers check NHTSA recall status before purchase; having recalls completed at a certified dealer protects value and documents the repair for prospective buyers. Start the process with a free VIN check at Bill Estes Ford Brownsburg and, when ready, get a valuation via our trade-in appraisal after recall work is completed.
Can I fail a state inspection because of an unresolved 2016 Ford Explorer recall?
Some recalls affect safety systems that may be relevant to state inspections; unresolved safety-related recalls could cause inspection issues depending on your state’s rules. Because several 2016 Ford Explorer recalls involve braking, fuel leaks, steering, and restraint systems, it’s prudent to resolve safety recalls promptly through a certified dealer like Bill Estes Ford Brownsburg. We can verify recall status and complete required remedies to help keep your vehicle compliant and safe for inspection and everyday use.

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2014-2016 Explorer, 2014-2015 Taurus and 2014 Edge vehicles equipped with 2.0L or 2.3L engines and front wheel drive. The support bracket for the front drive axle halfshaft may fail.

Corrective Action

Ford will notify owners, and dealers will replace the link shaft bracket, free of charge. Parts are not currently available. Owners will receive an interim notification about the recall beginning November 30, 2020. A second letter will be mailed when parts become available.
